Lucknow

Twenty-eighteen was certainly one of the biggest years in Lucknow Kinsmen & Kinette history.

Aside from celebrating the 45th anniversary of our club's inception, our team also hosted a massive party in August to ring in the 10th anniversary for Lucknow's Music in the Fields; our 100% non-profit first class music festival.

Starting with our Thursday night kick-off party on August 23rd, Canadian country legend George Canyon got the festival off right, as over 6000 concert guests filled the venue for LMITFX. With tons of great weekend activities such as line dancing, mechanical bull riding, zorb soccer, beach volleyball and frisbee golf, guests were also treated to the world class music entertainment of Brett Eldredge, Brett Kissel, Gord Bamford, Meghan Patrick and so many more. They were also treated to several incredible up-and-coming performers as we once again partnered up with the Country Music Association of Ontario who co-sponsored our Emerging Artist Stage.

As previously mentioned, this festival is completely non-profit as our primary goals include: raising funds for Cystic Fibrosis, local charity projects, hospital foundations, youth programs and for the purpose of driving up tourism in our local community.

This year did not disappoint, as fan support allowed us to enjoy our 2nd most successful year to date. This helped us to donate a significant dollar amount to these causes. During the festival we also hosted a special guitar raffle for festival patrons and one lucky winner walked away with a LMITF-branded guitar signed by every artist on the 3-day bill; culminating in a raffle value of over $10,000 raised for Cystic Fibrosis Canada.

A special thank you goes out to the local Hope Chapter Cystic Fibrosis team for their direct involvement with on-site ticket sales, ultimately making an incredible difference in the effort to promote the raffle.

The festival turned out to be a wonderful weekend, and the considerable investments that we continue to make into our new venue infrastructure have proved to be an essential avenue for growth and fan-appreciation. Currently, our club and our LMITF subcommittees are busy planning for our 11th festival in August 2019.

Please check out www.musicinthefields.ca and like us on all the major social media platforms to follow along with our progress.

Although Music in the Fields is certainly our biggest project of the year, the Lucknow Kinsmen Club is also busy with other successful events including our Men's Recreational Hockey Tournament and our Summerfest Slo-pitch Baseball Tournament in late June; now in it's 3rd decade of operations.

On behalf of the club, I would like to thank the greater Lucknow region for supporting our events and volunteering their time to make our events run successfully with a perfect blend of hard work, fun and community spirit. We look forward to 2019 and wish everyone a happy, healthy new year.

Yours in Kin,

Jordan Andrew

On October 13 the Township of Mapleton had their first annual Harvest festival. There was pie contests, kids face painting, fireman’s pancake breakfast, and the Kinsmen served sausage on a bun, fries, and hotdogs for a donation to C.F. Sausage was donated by Pillers fine foods. We raised $300 for C.F.

We were selling Christmas trees again in Drayton. We sold 170. We will raise roughly $2500 for C.F.

Currently we have rented 10 time slots at the arena for a C.F donation only free public skate.

Belgrave Recap

The Belgrave Kinsmen did our annual food drive on Wednesday, December 12th. We went house to house in Belgrave picking up canned food, boxed food and other supplies that could be used for the less fortunate at this time of year. It was a huge success as basically everyone had something to donate. This was all donated to the Huron County Food Drive.

8th Annual Diva on a Dime

The Kinette Club of Collingwood hosted their 8th Annual Diva on a Dime event on Sunday, April 7th at Exchanging Vows Bridal Boutique in Collingwood. This was yet another wonderfully successful event, with over 100 dresses and accessories finding their way into the lives of much deserving girls and ladies. The event brought in not only those searching for that perfect Prom or Grad dress but also Wedding dresses - two very happy Brides to be were able to say ‘Yes to the Dress’ in this exciting and supportive atmosphere. The donations of new and gently used items were at an all time high, making the selection for the girls and ladies so exciting!

The Kinettes would like to thank everyone that made this event so special and successful in reaching so many people in the community. The donations and support from the community were wonderful. A big thank you to fellow Kinette, Tara Klein, for the use of her beautiful boutique and the donation of new dresses, Michael Donovan of The Print Shop for all of the advertising material, Elaine Dickinson’s for the donation of new dresses and of course the local radio stations - 95.1 The Peak FM and 97.7 Max FM - for their support in promoting this event.

The Kinette Club of Collingwood looks forward to being able to host this amazing event for years to come!

Zone K Updates

From DG Melissa Penner
The last three months have gone by so fast. First, having the Spring Council Meeting with preparation for Zone Conference. Our Zone Conference was March 30th, 2019. Hosted by the St. Marys Kinette Club, and celebrating their 50th Anniversary which was actually March 1st. I am happy to announce that Sarah Denomme from the Clinton Kinette Club was elected as Zone K Kinette Deputy Governor-Elect. Jill McCullough from Clinton won the Zone Bulletin Award. Plus, their club has enlisted a few new members. The best-dressed club with the Conference theme went to the Mitchell Kinettes. With two really great jokes in the Joke-Off, Phyllis from St. Marys Kinette and the only Charter Member of the St. Marys Club which is a huge accomplishment! St. Marys is still going strong. We may have made history in having Zone Conference done in record time. Hensall Kinette on a roll with membership growth. Congratulations to all!

After over two months of canvassing local business's, organizing and grouping items, the Clinton and Goderich Kinsmen and Kinette Clubs held their 28 Annual TV Auction on March 1 & 2. Starting Friday night and again all day Saturday over 830 Items with a retail value close to $79,000 where up for grabs. The people of Goderich and Clinton area were very generous with their bids and help the Clubs raise over $54,000 that will be put back into the communities. Over $1000 was also raised for Cystic Fibrosis. The members of the Kinsmen and Kinette Clubs of Goderich and Clinton would like to thank all the business for their generous donations, large or small. Without you we would not be able to help us serve our "Communities Greatest Needs". We also have to thank all our volunteers who helped us by answering phones, live auctioneering, or any other duties that you preformed for us. Also to everyone who watched and participated in the bidding, a huge thank-you to you. Without all of you we could not raise the money we do. Our communities are stronger because of you! Our members have had alot of fun participating in the TV Auction and are already preparing our 29 Annual TV Auction for next year.

National Day of Kindness from around the District

Kinette Club of Shelburne

Kinette Club of Shelburne gave out free hot chocolate with marshmallows to Shelburne residents registering for summer sports.

Windsor Kin Club

To celebrate the Day of Kindness, we decided to try something different and hold a Kin information day at The Villages of St. Clair Nursing Home. The director of the home told us that the men at the home were thinking of starting a "mens club" and so our presentation was going to focus on how to go about that. After taking on this project, we found out that a Life Member of our Club, Bill Powers (1981) was a resident. That gave the project extra meaning to our Club.

The Club paid for a luncheon for the men at the home and we opened our presentation with a showing of the "Milk for Britain" movie which highlighted the history of Kin in Canada. President Andy then gave a talk on our Club's 88 year history in Windsor. We made sure we brought enough regalia and memorabelia for everyone to see what we were about. We also got Ontario flags and pins from our locall MPP to hand out to the residents.

To close the meeting, we held a special ceremony for Bill Powers and presented him with a KIN shirt and assorted pins. We also reminded him that he was STILL a member of the Club even though he was a bit behind in his dues. The home also arranged to have Mr. Powers' family in attendance to add meaning to the ceremony. Bill told us "the Club will always have a special place in his heart".

Fellow Kin, February 22nd and 23rd, we had our first ever District One Kin Family weekend at the Americana in Niagara Falls. We had 40 people come out and enjoy the fellowship and the facilities at the hotel. The waterpark was fantastic and the staff was great!! Some families even found time to spend the afternoon touring Niagara falls and Clifton hill. All this fun and fellowship was topped off with a Kin family dinner at Boston Pizza , Saturday night. We were also able to incorporate National Day of Kindness into the weekend ,handing our stickers with notes of praise (written by the kids) to the staff , as well as handing out NDK cards with chocolates on them. A great time was had by all who attended.

Stayner Club Keeping Busy

WOW ! What a weekend for the Stayner Club. Started Thursday night (November 30) with set up for local business dinner / dance. Sold out event with 150. On Friday night the club did dinner, live band, bar and dancing till the wee hours. Then, up and out early to host and organize our annual Santa Clause Parade including free hot dogs, hot chocolate and free skate with Santa at the end. Then, just to avoid getting bored it was back to last nights scene of the crime to reset the tables and room for the second night of dinner, dancing etc. etc. Second night was another sell out with 150 people served. Once we got rid of everybody in the wee small hours, clean up and tear down had to be done since the hall was booked next morning for another function. An extremely busy weekend but all the members stepped up and did their part, in fact often we had too much help. Oh, and by the way, somehow there was time for fellowship. That's what Kin is all about.

Zone G Cystic Fibrosis Interclub Night

November 7th Zone G held our 2nd annual Cystic fibrosis information interclub night hosted by the Dover Kinsmen club. This is an event where all the clubs in our zone and some from other zone come together for a night of fellowship and fun while we learn a little more about CF and reinforce why it's so important for clubs to raise money for CF Canada. Our guest speaker for the evening was Chris Beausoleil, who is a member of the Tilbury and District Kinsmen club and has CF. He spoke to us about his daily struggles with CF and the things he has to do in addition to going to work everyday, explaining that the things he has to do to stay as healthy as possible is equivalent to a part time job. We also take the opportunity to fundraise for CF, the Chatham Kinsmen clubs ran a 50/50 draw and we also had many donations to auction off. We were able to raise $1366.45 on the night and we had 100% attendance from the clubs in zone G and the Windsor Kin club from zone H came for the fun. It was a great night of fellowship and FUNdraising!!

Zone F Highlights!!

Well the St. Thomas Kinsmen and Kinettes have been very busy. They entered the St. Thomas Santa Clause Parade as they do every year.

It started with the parade meeting where the theme was revealed to be “Clearing the Tracks for Santa.”

An idea was brought forth to turn the towing vehicle into a locomotive. They started construction at 8am and were just finished in time for judging at 4:45. Many hands made light work, and through great teamwork and leadership from the “supervisors”

The St. Thomas Kinsmen Engine 1920 was finished complete with a functional smoke stack, and was awarded best theme in the Parade. Teardown started right after the parade was done and completely packed up by 11:15pm. It was cold, at times snowy, and a very long day! But this is part of what we are all about, great fellowship during the build, having a blast promoting the club during the parade, and more great fellowship celebrating our award after the teardown with some Bailey’s and hot chocolate.

Fonthill and District Kinsmen
We had a home show last April at the Pelham Arena on Haist Street. The home show is a huge success every year thanks to the hardworking participation of our club. We also have the Kinettes who help us with the event for the weekend and set up on the Wednesday. A thank you to LM Dave Ripley for organizing the application forms for our booth rentals. The event has been held annually since 1996.

Our club has recently welcomed a new member, Kurtis Bronn on September 18. Our current membership is 24 members.

Our club recently held a craft show at Centennial High School in Welland. The event raises money towards Pathstone Mental Health, Childrens Safety Village and Welland Special Olympics. The event is a success thanks to our chairman Kin Dave Kuckyt and all the Kinsmen and Kinettes that make the event run smoothly. The Kinsmen took over the event in 2009 from Women’s Place.

Our club is still going strong after 67 years of its founding.

Fort Erie Kinettes
We are Fort Erie !!! Fort Erie Kinettes that is, and prepare to watch us grow!!!

Over the past several years our club has sort of shuffled along. Zone and District obligations of some members coupled with natural attrition, meant we were just going through the motions, dropping in numbers and drifting with the tides. At the end June 2018, with a membership of only 4 active members, we decided we needed to take the wheel and once again chart our own course. We made a commitment to each other and those who went before us that we would focus on rebuilding our club and like the little engine that could we are gradually building steam.

Our first goal was to get back to routine. They say routine is important to wellbeing and success and that was apparent as we found ourselves adrift. Meetings weren’t static, we tried to accommodate everyone and some months not being able to agree on a date meant we just failed to meet. So we decided we needed to revert back to our previous meeting night. The meeting date would remain consistent and if you could make it great, but the bottom line was we needed consistency more than 100% attendance.
After all how do you invite someone to a group that has no stability?

Next we realized we needed to make our meetings someplace that you wanted to invite potential members to. Along with being static our meetings really hadn’t had any structure. In discussing what we wanted our meetings to be we decided to move back to a dinner meeting format. We’d tried other options, dessert and drinks, weekend meetings, someone’s home, even coffee shops, but we missed the fellowship that went with breaking bread together. We arranged for our meetings to be held at the Kinsmen’s club room and recruited their chef to cater our meal. We decided to further foster fellowship we would do a social event each month. We even went so far as to create a committee just to focus on those events. It doesn’t need to be costly, the idea is to do something fun together, enjoy each other’s company. Our first social; an afternoon of strolling the streets and cute boutiques of Niagara on the Lake followed by High Tea at the Prince of Wales hotel. We are thinking beer and bowling might be next…

We knew if we got them in the door we needed to have a meeting that would have them wanting to come back. First thing, we streamlined business; only what had to be addressed by the whole club got addressed by the whole club. Minutes are circulated a week in advance, treasurer’s report is available for perusal prior to dinner as is all correspondence. Committee reports if needed are kept to the two minute table topic idea. We wanted to focus on fellowship so we instituted an active fine session, and made sure each and everyone felt welcome and included. Then we took the most important step; we asked people to attend. People we knew would benefit from being part of our group and those who we thought would bring something valuable to the table. And they came…

In the day or two after our meeting we touched base with each and every one of our guests and thanked them for coming out adding that we hope to see them again. We sent them a reminder of our next meeting date and time and invited them to our next monthly social. We have three potential members that have already been to a second meeting and three more that will attend their second meeting next month. As we look ahead to our third general meeting of the year we have another two guests confirmed. Come January when our guests from October complete their 3 rd meeting and sign their membership forms we will have grown from a club of 4 to a club of 10.

We aren’t stopping there though, again like that little engine that could we are just building momentum, we are working on a membership plan that will see us do a more comprehensive membership drive. Who knows where we will be, come June 2019.

Being part of Kin is a like having a whole other family.
In Kin, when you are in need; your Kin family is always there to help.
We saw this in our Zone J community recently.
Cheryl McTeer is currently battling cancer for the second time. Our Hanover Kinsmen partnered with the McTeer family and put on a fundraiser for Cheryl and her children to help with the costs associated with chemo (not working, traveling etc.).
This fundraiser was held at the end of September and brought many people out to show their support.
We had Kin from all over District 1 come and support.
This day consisted of a live band, drinks, food stories and a silent auction.
At the end of the day; the Hanover Kinsmen raised $17000 for the McTeers!!

The Walkerton Kinettes also raised some funds for the McTeers.
The proceeds from their Home Shopping Day that was held recently will be donated to Cheryl and her children. (Final numbers were not ready at the time of posting).

When all is said and done; it is not about the money but the support that our Kin family has for one another!
This goes to show what a wonderful family we have within our Kin Organization!

Zone C News

Well here it is, fall, seems like summer just got started. All of the clubs have had a busy summer with events. Here’s a list of just a few.

Meaford: Their annual Kin Kamp was a huge success. And why not, they’ve been doing it for nearly 60 years. Tons of activities for young and old and lot’s of good old fashioned fellowship.

They are currently involved in the annual Meaford Scarecrow invasion. A must see for all!!! Another sign of the season the club is doing their annual Hot Tub draw.

Feversham: Just came off a successful dance and draw for a riding lawn mower. This was the conclusion of the annual Feversham Fall Fair. A ladies night for this fall is planned and Santa is coming to town, this year he says he will wear a seat belt

Flesherton: Club is on the rebound after last years highly successful membership drive. Mid August saw another successful Flesherton Fling go down. The enthusiasm from this bunch of guys is infectious. Look for great things in the next year.

Stayner: Another successful summer serving beer and wine every Thursday night at the farmers market and music fest. Completion of a 30’ x 50’ donated gazebo in Kin Park is scheduled for this fall. The club supplied guided tours at the Edenvale Airport Classic aircraft show. Plans are well under way for the annual Local Business Christmas Dinner and Dance, plan to serve 300 dinners. Santa arrives the same day with a huge donation to the local Food Bank.

Shelburne: Annual Canada Day celebration was another success, even in the sweltering heat. Beer for a year project is under way as well as Christmas Tree sales, Christmas Hampers and calls to anywhere in the world for the elderly.

Saturday of the long weekend was a great time for clubs sharing with each other. The Wasaga Kinettes needed help manning a bar on Saturday at a community event. The Stayner Kinsmen stepped up and had a great time helping out.

Coming From The Desk Of Your Zone B Deputy Governors

Hello Fellow Kin,

This coming from the desk of your Zone B Deputy Governors. Right now, our clubs are starting to gear up for the upcoming year. My partner and I have completed 8 out of 12 installations in our zone.

Many of the clubs are starting to plan their year with many events that are done throughout our zone. This is going to be an exciting year for me as I get to mentor my replacement. I know Kim and I will have fun travelling the zone to our club's many events.

Through the summer, the Kinsmen Club of Lucknow had their Music In The Fields which is a multi day music festival which the club raised thousands of dollars for their community and Cystic Fibrosis.

Can you believe it?

The summer is almost officially over!!!!

In Kin, this means our year of meetings is under way.

I am definitely looking forward to getting out to the clubs that I missed installations for, to meet you and hear about all of your plans for the year.

The clubs that I was able to attend their installations have awesome things underway. Thank you for your warm receptions, I am excited to come back and visit soon!

This year saw the attendance swell due to the International Plowing Match that was also in the area for the week. The truck and tractor pull has also become a popular interclub event as Dover had volunteers from the Chatham, Wallaceburg and Tilbury Kinsmen clubs to help serve the bar with members from many other zone G clubs in attendance to enjoy the show and support our Kin family. The Dover Kinsmen do an excellent job planning and organizing the event and the event was enjoyed by all in attendance. This is one of the most unique and well run events in District 1, if you’re looking for something to do next summer, check out the Dover Kinsmen Truck and Tractor pull.

A first-timers perspective on National Convention 2018!

I loved every minute of it! It was especially nice to have in District 1, way to go Sarnia.

The best time is meeting new friends from all across Canada. No Club, Zone or District is the same. Like no one in the Association is the same.

I did not go on the cruise but I dined with a lovely group from District 8. The service day was exciting, as I learned more about the foodbank and the associates that work together. Makes the less fortunate feel more to the community than in some other places. I am glad l was not a the water front cleanup because it started pouring on them. During the meetings l tried to sit with different groups. Learn and dine with excellent, with the guests speaker that we had were fabulous. I must say, I am glad l was not a judge for the speaking competition. Congratulations to all the speakers! I learned so much from every speech and I could resonate with all of them. The Galas were fantastic!

I had a Kinsman telling me what he did with his first National Convention by thanking pictures of him and others to remember it by. So Friday night I walked around taking selfies of every person I talked to. Someone thought I was drunk, no. I had one drink all night and had so much fun. This is just a part of my time. If you have never been to a National Convention, l urge you save your money and go. I would also like to thank my home club for sending me. The Mitchell & District Kinettes, you ladies rock.

Yours In Kin,
Melissa Penner
